You are here

The Generation Division is headed by the Senior Generation Engineer and is responsible for the generation of electricity through the operation of the Generating Plant and its ancillaries at Waterport Power Station. It is also responsible for the coordination of the Generating Plants at the South District Power Station, SO Energy and B124 for the purpose of electricity generation.

Waterport Power Station is currently equipped with three 5.25 MW diesel generators, with electricity also being supplied to the Gibraltar Electricity Authority by the South District Power Station, SO Energy and B124. The South District Power Station and B124 are H.M. Government of Gibraltar owned, whilst SO Energy is currently contracted by H.M. Government of Gibraltar.

Gibraltar is not covered by the United Kingdom’s ratification of the Kyoto Protocol. However, by virtue of Article 299(4) of the EC Treaty, Gibraltar is covered by Decision 2002/358/EC. Gibraltar will continue to ensure that future designs of installations are based on technologies that achieve maximum reductions in emissions and cost effectiveness.

All power stations in Gibraltar are subject to Directive 2010/75/EU of The European Parliament and of The Council of November 2010 on Industrial Emissions (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control). What used to be known as EU ETS Phase II. As from 2013 EU ETS Phase III has been implemented subject to EC Regulation EU no. 601/2012 on the Monitoring and Reporting of GHG’s pursuant to Directive 2003/87/EC (MRR). The main difference with the new Phase is; that there will be no free allowances of Carbon Credits as in the previous years i.e. all the CO2 (t) units will have to be purchased. Thus encouraging Nations to emit less CO2 (t) units to the atmosphere.
