About Us

The Gibraltar Electricity Authority is responsible for the generation, distribution and supply of electricity to the civilian population of Gibraltar.  The Authority is headed by the Chief Executive Officer and consists of Generation, Transmission and Distribution Network, Electrotechnical, Consumer, Electrical Building Services, Technomedical and Administration Divisions.

Generation

The Generation Division is headed by the Senior Generation Engineer and is responsible for the generation of electricity from the operation of all the Generating Plant and its ancillaries at Waterport Power Station. It is also responsible for coordinating the generating sets operation for the purpose of electricity generation from OESCO power station.  Waterport Power Station is currently equipped with three 5.25 MW diesel generators and electricity is also supplied to the Gibraltar Electricity Authority by OESCO, which is a privately owned company.

Distribution Network

The Network Division is headed by the Senior Network Engineer and carries responsibility for the transmission and distribution of electricity, encompassing the High Voltage (11000 volts) and Low Voltage (415/240 volts) networks together with street lighting, traffic signaling equipment, etc.  The Gibraltar Electricity Authority operates a transmission system which transfers electricity to three main distribution centres, located at Jumper’s Bastion, Orange Bastion and Waterport Power Station, from where more than seventy sub-stations are supplied.  All transmission lines are now at 11kV, three phase, three wire, 50 Hz.
The LV distribution network is supplied at 415kV, three phase, four wire, 50 Hz.
This Division is also responsible for the drawing office, the processing of Building Applications, design work for new projects and the issuing of cable/site clearance certificates

Electrotechnical

The Electrotechnical Division headed by the Senior Electrotechnical Engineer and is responsible for all High Voltage and Low Voltage plant and equipment at Waterport Power Station, including the generators and the SCADA (Supervision, Control And Data Acquisition) system in the Power Station and Distribution centres. This division is also responsible for the erection, commissioning and maintenance of substations which include Transformers, Low Voltage Fuseboards, High Voltage Switchgear, Protection Relays, Batteries and chargers, fire detection, emergency lighting and protection equipment.

Consumer Services Division

The Consumer Services Division is headed by the Consumer Engineer and is responsible for the following: -

  • Inspection of electrical installations.
  • Dealing with consumers requirements (Application for supply, Disconnection of supply, etc.).
  • Installation and maintenance of meters and rising mains to consumer premises.
  • Festive Illuminations.
  • Floodlighting of North Face and other landmarks.
  • Testing and calibration of meters and instruments.
  • Controllers for Traffic Signals and Pedestrian Crossings.

Technomedical

The Technomedical Division is headed by the Senior Technomedical Engineer and is responsible for the following: -

  • Clinical equipment and apparatus engineering.
  • Electrical engineering.
  • Mechanical engineering.
  • General technical works within the Gibraltar Health Authority.
  • Building Management System.
  • Communications .
  • General infrastructure

Electrical Building Services

The Electrical Building Services Division headed by the Building Services Engineer and is responsible for the following: -

  • Electrical installations and contracting works in all official buildings, schools, offices, workshops, depots and all government housing including estates.
  • Lifts installations
  • Fire detection/alarms installations
  • Security/back-up (UPS) systems
  • St. Michael’s Cave
  • Services for special events.
  • Computer cabling networks

Finance & Administration

The Finance & Administration division is headed by the Finance & Administration Director and is responsible for the following:-

  • Overall management, supervision, control and development of the administrative, secretarial, accounting and financial functions of the Authority’s business
  • Preparation and presentation of estimates
  • Management of Human Resources, Health &Safety issues and Statutory obligations
  • Management of procurement, salaries and consumer services (Consumer Division Arrears Section)
