On the 1 October 1890 Mr William H H Preece was commissioned by the
Colonial Government to “enquire into the propriety of introducing electric
light” on the Rock. |
| 1892 |
A loan for the supply of electricity was raised under the Electric Light
Ordinance of 1892 and works commenced on 15 September 1896 on the
construction of King’s Bastion Power Station. |
1897 |
Electric Light was first displayed in Gibraltar in April 1897 |
| 1898 |
The Electric Light department was formed on 9 March 1898 and certain public
highways were first lit using electricity on 27 March 1899. |
1902 |
On the 1 January 1902 “The Electricity Lighting Works” was purchased by the
Sanitary Commissioners and by 1909 the capacity of the plant installed at
King’s Bastion amounted to 1 MW. |
| 1921 |
The City Council succeeded the Sanitary Commissioners. |
| 1935 |
A policy was adopted by the City Council for a complete conversion to
compression ignition oil engines. |
| 1946 |
Three diesel sets with a combined output of 1,800 KW were commissioned. |
1949 |
The Distribution Network was modernised and the first sub-station operating
at 6.6kV was commissioned in November 1949. |
| 1959 |
Construction of a Power Station north of King’s Bastion and two years later a
Mirrlees KVSS16 diesel engine for the station was commissioned in
November 1961. The fifth set, a Mirrlees KV16 Major rated at 4960 KW,
entered service in October 1972. |
| 1973 |
An interconnector with the Inter-Services Power Station at H M Dockyard was
commissioned in May 1973. |
| 1979 |
Messrs Preece Cardew and Rider were instructed by the Government of
Gibraltar to prepare a design brief for the construction of a new Power Station
at the North Mole and the contract was awarded to Hawker Siddeley Power
Engineering in February 1981. |
| 1982 |
Waterport Power Station was commissioned in August 1982 with two 5.25MW
engines, while a third 5.25 MW set was commissioned in 1988. |
| 1989 |
The Government of Gibraltar entered into an agreement to purchase electricity
from a privately owned company, the Ormrod Electricity Supply Company
Limited (OESCO). A power station equipped with diesel generating sets was commissioned and operated by OESCO Ltd, the first set came into operation on the 9 June 1990. |
| 1994 |
Number of sub-stations reached 60. |
| 2003 |
An Act was passed in the Gibraltar House of Assembly on the 28th March
2003 establishing the Gibraltar Electricity Authority. The Authority was established with the object of supplying electricity in an efficient and economical manner and to maintain and develop the network and generating system.
Installation and commissioning of the SCADA (Supervision, Control And Data Acquisition) system.
Members of the Gibraltar Electricity Board are nominated. |
| 2005 |
King’s Bastion Generating Station buildings were demolished. |
| 2006 |
Completion of the removal of the 6.6kV transmission voltage from the network, bringing the ‘Up-rating to 11kV Programme’ to an end.
Number of sub-stations reached 70.
Gibraltar Electricity Authority Safety Rules are revised and implemented.
